Why solidification has an S-shaped history

چکیده
Here we show theoretically that the history of solid growth during ‘‘rapid’’ solidification must be S-shaped, in accord with the constructal law of design in nature. In the beginning the rate of solidification increases and after reaching amaximum it decreasesmonotonically as the volume of solid tends toward a plateau. The S-history is a consequence of four configurations for the flow of heat from the solidification front to the subcooled surroundings, in this chronological order: solid spheres centered at nucleation sites, needles that invade longitudinally, radial growth by conduction, and finally radial lateral conduction to interstices that are warming up. The solid volume (Bs) vs time (t) is an S-curve because it is a power law of type Bs, t where the exponent n first increases and then decreases in time (n5 3/2, 2, 1,...). The initial portion of the S curve is not an exponential.

Influence of the thermal history and composition on the melting/solidification process in Sn-Ag-Cu solders
Presented work shows the results of DSC measurement for six Sn based solders. The alloys Sn96Ag4, Sn99Cu1, Sn97Cu3, Sn96.5Ag3Cu0.5, Sn95.5Ag3.8Cu0.7 and Sn63Pb37 were studied in the temperature range from room temperature up to 400◦C. The transformation temperatures for melting as well as for solidification were influenced by the composition and thermal history of the alloys. The thermal histor...

Abstract: The horizontal continuous casting process has received a significant attention for near net shape casting of non ferrous metals and alloys. Numerical Simulation has been widely used for process design and optimization of continuous casting process. In the present study, a 3-dimensional heat flow model was developed to simulate the heat transfer and solidification in a horizontal b...
متن کاملThermo-Mechanical Model of Solidification Processes with Abaqus
A computational thermo-mechanical model has been developed to simulate the continuous casting of shaped sections, such as used for thin steel slabs. A general form of the transient heat equation including latent-heat from phase transformations such as solidification and other temperature-dependent properties is solved numerically for the temperature field history. The resulting thermal stresses...
متن کاملAn Exegetic Study of the Verse 35 of the Chapter Sad with an Answer to the Objection against the Solomon`s Prayer
Solomon, the prophet, (a) called upon the Almighty God for a unique government, as stated in the verse 35 of Sad: "He said: My Lord! Forgive me and bestow on me sovereignty such shall not belong to any after me." The Almighty God granted him a unique government. Here an objection rises in the mind: why did the prophet called upon God such a government that no one may have after him? Isn`t it a ...
متن کاملMODELING OF RAPID SOLIDIFICATION PROCESS IN THE GAS ATOMIZATION OF MOLTEN METALS
In the present work, a model was proposed to predict the thermal history during rapid solidification (RS) of metal droplets in the gas atomization process. The classical theory of heterogeneous nucleation was based on Newtonian heat flow and enthalpy method. Solving the governing numerical equations by the finite difference method (FDM) gave up the opportunity of analyzing the temperature-time ...
